Spring is a time of renewal; a time to start fresh and clean. And there’s no better place to begin that renewal than in your home. As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, homeowners in Santa Barbara and across the nation will be freshening up their living spaces by deep cleaning carpets and floors, removing winter residue from windows and screens, and getting into all the nooks and crannies where dust and dirt collect.
Join your fellow house cleaners and get your spring cleaning underway with these three quick and easy tips for cleaning your windows, screens and blinds with everyday items found around your house; no need to buy any special equipment or cleaners. Let the sunshine in!
- Windows – Here’s the scoop…you can use your newspaper and a quick and easy homemade cleaning solution to get your windows streak-free and squeaky clean – inside and out. The print on the paper acts as a gentle abrasive and removes dirt and grime from your windows effortlessly when paired with a mild cleaning solution. Just combine ¼ cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the glass and gently scrub with the newspaper.
- Blinds – Your grill or food tongs are handy tools for cleaning your blinds. Pair them with a couple of cleaning cloths and rubber bands to get those blinds dust-free in minutes! Here’s how: cover each “arm” of your tongs with a disposable dusting cloth or your favorite microfiber cloth and secure with rubber bands. Then clamp the tongs to both sides of each individual slat of the blinds to remove built up dust from both sides at once. No need for a cleaning solution; a dry cloth will get the job done!
- Screens – Prevent the built up dust and pollen on your window or door screens from blowing into your house by using your vacuum and garden hose (but not together!). Start by removing the screens and laying them on old towels or blankets, Vacuum each side of the screen with the vacuum attachment. Then, stand the screens up and use a rag and soapy water to gently wash each side of the screen. Rinse the soap off with the garden hose, then let dry before reinstalling.
